This morning Tesla released its Q4 2019 vehicle production and deliveries results, delivering an all time record of approximately 112,000 vehicles in Q4 and ~367,500 vehicles in 2019 overall. This result exceeds the lower end of Tesla’s annual guidance (360,000 to 400,000 vehicles) and is a 50% increase over 2018 deliveries.
Most Tesla owners have a home charger (or NEMA 14-50 outlet) installed in their garage before taking delivery of their Model S, 3, or X. But not everyone lives in a house with a garage. Some new Tesla owners live in an apartment building or condo that might not (yet) have any EV charging. Should this prevent you from buying a Tesla?
Starting from this year onwards, I will place my predictions for the next 12 months in article form. Most of these predictions are based on historical facts or behavioural economics, and I would be happy if I am 50% correct by end of next year. The Tesla Cybertruck may be “old news” by now (ah, the not-so-endearing ADD of the internet), but a piece of ours explaining why it doesn’t really need a garage was still king of the hill last month. Tesla took silver too, with a story explaining that the 2012 Tesla Model S still has superior specs to new 2020 EV entrants from other companies than Tesla. In third was a piece on world-leading research from our friend Mark Z. Jacobson and several colleagues on how the world could be a galaxy-leading 100% renewable energy planet!
There’s a bit of a problem in much of the media these days. There’s a broad assumption — from both media consumers and members of the media — that media outlets are supposed to present “two sides of the story.” Case in point: Tesla.
It’s going to take me a little while to explain the headline, but I’ll get there. It has been well documented that China’s 1 child policy (from 1979 to 2015) caused the sex ratio in China to skew heavily male. The preference for Chinese parents was to have sons, since sons in Chinese society have been traditionally responsible for taking care of their parents in old age.
