Tesla Backup Gateway 2 … Bank of America UK EV Cost of Ownership Study … Tesla Revenue Growth — #CleanTechnica Top 20

December 16th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

What caught readers' eyes the most on CleanTechnica last week? That would be the new Tesla Backup Gateway 2, which looks like a mini Powerwall; a titillating study on EV total cost of ownership in the UK that Bank of American Merrill Lynch conducted and shared with CleanTechnica; and a commentary on Tesla's revenue growth juxtaposed against Tesla critics' seemingly never-ending pessimism, which is typically very misplaced

Bank of America Merrill Lynch: UK Tesla Model 3 & Other EV 3-Year Total Cost of Ownership Analysis Shows EVs Much Cheaper than Fossil Competitors

December 7th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

We've published numerous analyses of our own on the total cost of ownership of the Tesla Model 3 and Volkswagen ID.3 compared to top gasoline competitors. However, if you don't trust research from CleanTechnica, perhaps you'll find the work of a major international financial firm more palatable. A recently published report from Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) that was passed along to CleanTechnica dove into this topic for the

Is Tesla Model 3 The Next Toyota Camry?

October 9th, 2019 | by Matt Pressman

Editor's Note: I've been planning to write an article about these two cars for a while, so it's nice to get a bump from Loup Ventures, which has beat me to it! Check out Matt's summary of the analysis below

European Car Leasing System Will Blow Up Tesla & Other EV Sales

October 8th, 2019 | by Maarten Vinkhuyzen

Our recent article about the consequences of depreciation and resale value on the financial health and calculations of leasing companies begs for a European leasing sequel. In Europe, leasing is a bit different from the thing with the same name in the

Tesla Model 3 vs. Honda Accord — Comparable 5 Year Cost to Own

September 30th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

I published an analysis the other day showing the Tesla Model 3 undercutting the Toyota Camry on a 5 year cost of ownership forecast. The plan for a while has been to update these cost of ownership comparisons since prices, tax credits, and other matters have changed in the past several months. I honestly did not expect the Model 3 to come out on top after all of the changes, but it clearly did so in the comparison with the Camry. With that comparison in mind, it's pretty certain where a similar 5 year cost of ownership comparison with the Honda Accord is going to go

Volkswagen ID.3 vs. Volkswagen Golf — 5 Year Cost of Ownership Comparison

September 19th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

For this analysis, I'm comparing the Volkswagen ID.3 to the lowest trim Volkswagen Golf and the highest trim Golf, but not adding any options/extras. The ID.3 likely has top-of-the-line technology, so even the base ID.3 should probably be compared to higher-trim versions of the Volkswagen Golf. Consider this an unfair handicap for the incumbents

Shocker: Tesla Model 3 vs. Honda Civic — 15 Cost Comparisons Over 5 Years

June 14th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

When I got started on this analysis, I thought, "Well, looks like we finally have a car that is going to come out with a lower 5 year cost than a Tesla Model 3." Nonetheless, I was super curious to see the results and see how close the Model 3 came to different Civic trims. I did not expect that the Model 3 would beat the Civic on cost in several scenarios. Does it? Does it, really

Sorry, Elon — I Overestimated The Costs Of The Tesla Model 3

October 13th, 2018 | by Paul Fosse

For this article, I wanted to correct and update estimates of the maintenance and repair costs of the Model 3 based on some research I’ve done. Aside from updating those figures and the total cost of ownership (TCO) conclusions, I also wanted to compare the Model 3 to a couple more cars
