October in Sweden saw a huge new record of 36.2% plugin electric vehicle market share, up 3x from 12% in October 2019. As usual, plugin hybrids made the largest contribution, though the 8.2% share of pure electrics was very substantial in its own right. The full year result is now tracking to reach at least 30%.
Sweden saw pure fossil fuel powered vehicle market share fall to an all time low of 47.3% in September. Plugin electric vehicles broke new ground at 34.4%, and plugless hybrid vehicles took the remaining 18.4%. We can expect pure fossils to continue on a steady decline from here on out.
Sweden continued to grow its plugin electric vehicle market share in August 2020, reaching 28%, up from 8.7% in August 2019. The overall auto market showed recovery, down just 13% from an unusually strong August last year. Swedish plugin electric vehicle market share is still headed for 30% over full year 2020.

In January, I wrote about four countries leading the world in electric vehicle adoption — not in terms of absolute sales, but in terms of plugin vehicle market share in those countries. My main interest was examining how their adoption curves looked and if they were similar. Half a year later, here’s an update.
Sweden remains an odd plug-in vehicle market in which plug-in hybrids heavily outweigh full electrics. Part of that may be because Volvo Cars only sells plug-in hybrids so far, and Volvo is sort of popular in Sweden.
The Swedish plug-in electric vehicle market share in June 2020 hit 25%, up significantly from 10% in June 2019. Overall auto sales were still recovering, down 23% year on year.
