Celebrating Elon Musk’s 48th Birthday
Along with his family, many members of the Tesla community came together in their own way this past week to wish Elon Musk a happy birthday.

On Friday, June 21st, 2019, the Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley stopped by three Tesla locations to drop off donuts as a way to encourage Tesla employees. This was a beautiful endeavor that any brand would feel amazing to have their customers do.
Among people closely following Tesla, it seems that the biggest topic of the past week has been biased and misleading coverage of Tesla, and electric vehicles or cleantech more generally, from major media outlets.
Last week I wrote about why Tesla should advertise. That stimulated plenty of discussion, some pro, some con, and a fair amount of pushback. This article is meant to address the many points raised by commenters and add extra perspective to the first article.
Why has Twitter become such a battleground over Tesla? Amit Katwala writes in Wired UK, “There’s no reason why a car company should be so divisive, but the warring tribes of Tesla fans and [Tesla haters] speak to human nature, the cult of celebrity, and the polarizing impact of the social media echo chamber.” Others believe it gets to something deeper. More on that in a moment.
As part of my efforts to fight untrue Tesla myths, I recently engaged the Tesla community to create a Tesla Myth Busters FAQ page. I sent out a call to “assemble a full-fledged myth-busting campaign,” and people responded. We simply want to set the record straight regarding various Tesla myths. Thanks to the Tesla community who heeded my call, this first draft was produced in just four days, which is astonishing and wonderful when you think about it.
The rates utilities charge for electricity vary wildly across different parts of the world, just as gas prices do. However, electric vehicles are cheaper to operate on a per-mile basis just about everywhere, thanks to the electric motor’s far greater efficiency, and to the fact that regions with high electricity prices also tend to have high gas prices. A very rough rule of thumb is that driving an EV should cost about a third of what driving a comparable legacy vehicle does.
To the average American, Tesla is just another topic in the news alongside China, Trump, the weather, terrorism, national disasters, local sports, and celebrity gossip. They have their morning coffee, rush to work, and glance at the news on their phones. Actually, many Americans work rotating shifts. Those shifts may begin at 9:00 PM at night — and they may not have time to catch up on the news. Unless someone is exposed to Tesla via a customer, fan, or shareholder, they will often only know from what they hear or see in the news.
Tesla will start rolling out the next generation of its in-car games this week. That starts with the introduction of Beach Buggy Racing 2 in the in-car entertainment system.
Tesla is also showing off its new Tesla Arcade in stores, but only for a limited time.
The automobile has always been a very dynamic product. Since cars came into widespread use in the early 20the century, almost everything about them has been constantly (albeit slowly) changing.
