China’s EV boom is turning into a bust. Sales of “new energy vehicles” have been sliding for the past 10 months. In April, they showed a 43% drop from the same month in 2019.
I recently met with Dr. Xinzhou Wu, Vice President of Autonomous Driving at Xpeng Motors, to learn more about the company’s autonomous vehicle (AV) bottom-up approach, part of its long-term strategic plan. Dr. Wu is in charge of overall strategy and technical planning of the business and team management for Xpeng’s global autonomous driving R&D center in Silicon Valley, California.
Two of my favorite electric vehicle (EV) startups are teaming up, and that is good news for the industry. NIO and Xpeng Motors are teaming up in China, and it should raise a sense of urgency in the West for more EV mobility companies to collaborate.
CleanTechnica was invited to the Guangzhou Auto Show by Xpeng Motors to see the official unveiling of its sleek P7. If you haven’t heard about the P7 yet, see our previous article on it. The electric vehicle (EV) is Xpeng’s second car and resoundingly focuses on an intelligent, smart platform. The car is chock full of goodies, and the interior feels spacious, roomy, and very comfortable.
The first time I saw the Xpeng Motors P7 at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show, I knew it would rank high on my list. I recently spoke with the designers of the electric vehicle (EV) to find out their motivation and inspiration for the car’s design. What they told me was different and surprising. I was even more surprised by the way the conversation took a different direction than expected. I will be at the Guangzhou Auto Show in a few days to see the official unveiling and write more about it on CleanTechnica, but this piece covers that initial interview with the designers.
Xpeng Motors continues its strategic growth this week with the signing of a Series C capital funding round of $400 million from a group of strategic and institutional investors. At the same time, Xpeng announced that Xiaomi Corporation is joining as a strategic investor.
While the Xpeng G3 electric vehicle (EV) continues its stellar sales climb, the stunning P7 EV has finished a round of tests equal to traveling 10 times around the globe. The company also secured a charging network and ecosystem partnership with TELD, China’s largest charging infrastructure. Additionally, the P7 is the first Smart Car with its own Alibaba In-Car Mini app, and pioneers an IFAA-standard Virtual Car Key. Not bad for a three-year young startup working on a Chinese schedule.
Xpeng Motors (Xpeng) kicked off the delivery of its Xpeng G3 2020 Edition EV at the Chengdu Motor Show this weekend and thus hit another milestone. Less than 2 months after launching the new, enhanced, high-performance version of its G3 SUV series, the company beat most delivery estimates while continuing its steady rollout strategy.
Xpeng is continuing its steady progression in China while it handles its first crisis of sorts. While the press and Xpeng’s clientele have been positive with the newly upgraded G3, some of the previous G3 buyers have expressed concerns. Xpeng listened and quickly worked out a sweet deal for those who bought an Xpeng G3 beforehand.
