A lot of the OEMs have not expressed any interest in bringing EVs to the rest of Africa anytime soon. With the majority of them struggling to meet demand in their home and traditional markets, it doesn’t look like Africa will be a priority anytime soon.
The French plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market registered a record 7,250 units in December, +28% year over year (YoY), a new all time record. That was thanks to leader Renault Zoe (2,097 units, a new year best), which seems to be past the worse of the production ramp up, and the Tesla Model 3, which moved 1,250 units, its best result ever in France. Additionally, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales more than doubled YoY, helping to set the record score.
The French plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had 5,540 registrations in November, with fully electric vehicles (BEVs) dropping 10% year over year (YoY), to 3,201 units. However, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) took the fast lane and were up 80%.
The French plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had 6,433 registrations in October, up 65% year over year (YoY). Interestingly, this time, it was the plug-in hybrids (+118%) pulling the market up the most, with BEVs growing “just” 53%.

It was nearly a year ago that I wrote an article on CleanTechnica about taking a 300 mile journey in a relatively short-range car, the Peugeot iOn, which is capable of only 50 to 70 miles at the absolute most on a single charge. The idea behind it was to say to people, “Look at me doing this. If I can do it in this little car, anyone can make use of an EV for a longer journey, especially a modern EV with 100 to 300 miles of range.” I thought it might give people more confidence to consider getting an EV, knowing it can be used for any journey, and knowing that you do not need 400 miles of range to make an EV practical for everyday use.
The French passenger electric vehicle market scored 5,847 registrations in June, up 25% year over year (YoY). That plug-in double-digit growth is even more significant when we realize that the overall market remained stagnant (-2%). This result placed the 2019 plug-in vehicle (EV) share at 2.5%, with fully electric vehicles (BEVs) alone having 1.9% share.
The French plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market scored 4,051 registrations in May, up 34% year over year (YoY), with fully electric cars (+36%) growing faster than plug-in hybrids (30%). All-electric cars (BEVs) represented 71% of all plug-in sales.
There is no other reason for me to report on the Dutch sales than that it is my home market, and I have the numbers.

This growth is even more significant when we realize that the overall vehicle market remained stagnant (+0.4%).
