Electric Car Sales In Emerging EV Markets — Chapter 1: Africa

November 24th, 2018 | by Jose Pontes

While EV adoption is fairly well documented in North America, Europe, and Asia, other geographies have been mostly or entirely absent from the media coverage — like Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. While electric vehicles in most countries in these areas are still something for the future, there are some interesting cases that deserve special mention. As such, I have split this topic in three chapters — one for Africa, the second for the Middle East, and the third for Latin America. Here, I am covering chapter 1, Africa

Chevrolet Bolt — The Right Electric Car On The Wrong Continent

October 21st, 2018 | by Jose Pontes

The Bolt EV was GM’s natural follow-up to the Volt's pioneering steps into electromobility. With the compact plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) market covered with the Volt, it was time for GM to go after the fully electric (BEV) subcompact segment, and for that, GM teamed up with Korea's LG. The result was a small yet space-efficient EV with a big, flat roller-skate battery between the wheels and a powerful motor. It was GM's first BEV-dedicated platform

BMW i3S — The BMW Version of the i3?

October 21st, 2018 | by Jose Pontes

I has really happy to get the opportunity to try out the new i3S on my recent trip to the US (many thanks, BMW USA!), as it would give me an opportunity to compare it to the standard i3 I had last year. That was the most fun I ever had with an EV (until this year, that is)

September 28th, 2018 | by Jose Pontes

The Chinese plug-in vehicle (PEV) market hit its second best score this year, with some 93,000 units registered in August. However, it was up only 62%. This is a slowdown from the three-digit growth rates of previous months, and is explained by the fact that "new energy vehicle" subsidies were slashed for vehicles with range lower than 150 km. That happened in June, resulting in many small city EVs losing a large number of sales
