There are lots of good reasons to oppose the Keystone XL pipeline, but in the end, it may never get built because there are a lack of customers rather than because of protests and lawsuits.
Even though Hillary Clinton is no longer in charge of the State Department, some in the GOP continue to hold a grudge. Which is why they voted to removed the State Department from the approvals chain for pipelines that cross an international border. Hey, it’s petty, but it’s one of the few accomplishments the House can claim so far this year.
Despite all of the talk to the contrary (and fake smiling), it seems that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has no intent to seriously address the country’s complicity in worsening anthropogenic climate change. Going by his actions since becoming Prime Minister, it’s clear that the comments that some critics made during the election that Trudeau was “just a face” were mostly accurate.
Donald Trump has put to rest any doubts that he would be a terrible President for the US environment this week, by freezing all EPA grant funding programmes and literally censoring the agency and its employees, declaring environmentalism “out of control”, and reviving the controversial Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines.
Clearly, the political focus of the year is a certain mind-boggling presidential candidate who hardly touches policy matters — and when he does, tends to push absurd ideas and proposals that would tank our economy, lead to world war, destroy our climate and environment, and piss off our allies. However, as I wrote the other day, Donald Trump’s success in politics wasn’t magic — far from it. Donald Trump’s success in politics was built on the back of decades worth of conspiracy theories and anti-science rhetoric and extremism from the Republican Party. (Come on, people, there’s a reason he won the GOP nomination.)
