We may have some more high-selling blockbuster electric vehicles in 2020, but 2019 had one electric vehicle that was in a league of its own, the Tesla Model 3. Through November, the Model 3 had almost 3× the sales of the world’s 2nd best selling EV, the BAIC EU-Series, and it had more than 4× the sales of the world’s 2nd best selling non-Chinese EV.
Tesla accounts for 1 out of every 6¼ global plug-in vehicle sales. The Tesla Model 3 alone accounts for 1 out of every 8 global plug-in vehicle sales, 13% of the global market.
Although we are far from the millions of plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and fully electric vehicles (EV) needed to slow down our pollution race, the 3 million mark of sold PHEVs and EVs has been reached globally.
It’s good news, bad news time at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. First, the good news. Global electric car sales (including plug-in hybrids) surged 63% in the third quarter of this year and are up 23% since the second quarter. BNEF is now confident EV sales will top 1,000,000 units this year. The bad news? China accounted for almost all of those increases.
