January 7th, 2020 | by Zachary Shahan

The US auto industry took a bit of a whack in 2019. Excluding Tesla, auto sales were down by 177,839 units in 2019 compared to 2018. That said, only 13 auto brands saw their sales drop, while 18 saw their sales rise

California Offers Up To $9,500 To Purchase Used Or New Electric Vehicle, Focus On Lower-Income Motorists

January 5th, 2020 | by Cynthia Shahan

I understand income barriers. So, bravo to California for helping those who want to change afford to change. California's new electric vehicle (EV) incentives for the lower income help them improve air quality and fight climate change by going electric. They can now get $9,500 in EV incentives in certain regions, or even $14,000 if you add in state incentives and all requirements are met

January 4th, 2020 | by Zachary Shahan

Sweden probably isn't one of the first countries that come to mind when talking about electric vehicle leaders, but plug-in vehicles have a higher market share there than in almost any other country in the world. In 2019, 11% of auto sales were sales of plug-in vehicles

Tesla Cybertruck vs. Garage … Dutch EV Sales Explosion … 2012 Model S Still Beats New Non-Tesla EVs — Top 20 CleanTechnica Stories of December

January 2nd, 2020 | by Zachary Shahan

The Tesla Cybertruck may be "old news" by now (ah, the not-so-endearing ADD of the internet), but a piece of ours explaining why it doesn't really need a garage was still king of the hill last month. Tesla took silver too, with a story explaining that the 2012 Tesla Model S still has superior specs to new 2020 EV entrants from other companies than Tesla. In third was a piece on world-leading research from our friend Mark Z. Jacobson and several colleagues on how the world could be a galaxy-leading 100% renewable energy planet!

December 24th, 2019 | by Jose Pontes

The European passenger plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market landed some 55,000 registrations in November (+44%), with the Dutch market and plug-in hybrids (+80% year over year, or YoY) pulling the market up the most, while fully electric vehicles (BEVs) were waiting for the 2020 flood (+23%, their lowest growth rate since June 2018)

Audi Announces €12 Billion For EV Development, BMW €400 Million For 2021 iNEXT Production

December 23rd, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

The electric vehicle revolution continues to heat up, and while we'd love to be reporting on more electric models hitting the market in 2020, the fact is traditional automakers were a bit too slow for that and there's much more being put into models for 2021 and beyond. Audi and BMW both recently had announcements about investments for the coming years

December 18th, 2019 | by Jose Pontes

Something clicked in the German plug-in vehicle market after the summer holidays. After two consecutive record months, November saw 10,985 units registered, only the second five-digit performance in Germany's history, after the record 11,926 units of October. It seems Europe's e-locomotive has finally been set in motion, which is a promising sign for

Bank of America Merrill Lynch: UK Tesla Model 3 & Other EV 3-Year Total Cost of Ownership Analysis Shows EVs Much Cheaper than Fossil Competitors

December 7th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

We've published numerous analyses of our own on the total cost of ownership of the Tesla Model 3 and Volkswagen ID.3 compared to top gasoline competitors. However, if you don't trust research from CleanTechnica, perhaps you'll find the work of a major international financial firm more palatable. A recently published report from Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) that was passed along to CleanTechnica dove into this topic for the

US Gas Vehicle Sales Up Big In November, Still Down In 2019

December 7th, 2019 | by Zachary Shahan

Tracking monthly US auto sales by company or brand is one of the oddest-feeling things I've done in my decade or so covering cleantech. Perhaps that's because the focus is on tracking non-clean tech. The fact is, though, it shocks me every month to see how many people still buy gasoline cars. Gasoline cars are far worse than electric cars currently on the market for the same cost (or even less). Nonetheless, there are so many people buying clunky, noisy, slow, high-maintenance, low-tech, high-depreciation gasoline vehicles every single day. Objectively, it doesn't make sense
