In Pittsburgh, the Port Authority of Allegheny County (PAAC) just chose to add six more of New Flyer’s Xcelsior CHARGE electric buses to its fleet. These new buses are 40 feet long and are zero-emissions heavy-duty transit buses that will help the community to lower its collective carbon footprint.
The Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, lovingly known as MARTA for those of us who live or have lived (in my case) in the Metro Atlanta area, has made a purchase and a statement in favor of clean energy. MARTA ordered six Xcelsior CHARGE™ zero-emission, battery-electric 40-foot, heavy-duty transit buses from New Flyer.
For years, we saw North American cities order 3 or 4 electric buses at a time while Chinese cities ordered hundreds or thousands. It was frustrating and annoying, especially considering that electric buses had become cost-competitive with all other options 7 years ago in some places. Well, time marched on, and we’re finally seeing large orders of electric buses.
New York City’s MTA announced on December 15, 2019, that it has deployed the first phase of its new all-electric articulated bus fleet. The now historic 2020–2024 Capital Plan includes $1.1 billion to acquire 500 new electric buses to serve all 5 boroughs. This first phase includes 15. The first electric articulated bus took off on one of the city’s busiest crosstown routes – the 14th Street busway.
Officials continue to adopt electric buses to serve transit needs in cities all over the world. In the latest news, Los Angeles and Seoul are the latest to jump aboard. Los Angeles is buying 40, while Seoul is buying 143.
Electric bus announcements seem to pop up almost daily now. The latest one is from Oregon.New Flyer of America (New Flyer), which is a subsidiary of NFI Group, North America’s largest bus manufacturer, has delivered a zero-emission battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE bus to the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet).
