Daimler has unveiled its Fuso branded eCanter electric truck in Manhattan. Mitsubishi Fuso is part of the Daimler Truck Group, along with Freightliner and Mercedes-Benz. The eCanter electric light duty delivery truck has been under development for several years and will be manufactured in Tramagal, Portugal. It goes on sale in the US, Europe, and Japan starting later this year, according to a company press release.
Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, decided to invest in the global truck business at the beginning of the 21st century. Today, it has 5 brands in its portfolio — Mercedes-Benz Trucks, Freightliner Trucks, Mitsubishi FUSO, Western Star, and BharatBenz. Freightliner has a 40% share of the heavy truck market in the US. But Tesla is planning to disrupt that market with the Tesla Semi electric truck due to be unveiled in September.
Daimler will be manufacturing a small run of Mercedes-Benz Urban e-Trucks following the positive reception of the concept at the 2016 IAA Commercial Vehicles trade show, and in anticipation of a further large-scale rollout of the technology, according to a new press release from the German giant.
