Tagging onto my article from yesterday on Volkswagen ID.3 cost of ownership versus cost of ownership of the Renault Megane or Skoda Octavia, here’s a brief followup for perhaps a more common comparison vehicle — the Volkswagen Golf.
There’s great anticipation across the world for one of the most compelling new fully electric models coming to market this year — the Volkswagen ID.3. Let’s compare some 5 year cost of ownership estimates for the ID.3, Renault Megane, and Skoda Octavia.
Sweden remains an odd plug-in vehicle market in which plug-in hybrids heavily outweigh full electrics. Part of that may be because Volvo Cars only sells plug-in hybrids so far, and Volvo is sort of popular in Sweden.
Portugal is a somewhat surprising bright spot in the electric vehicle market. It has one of the highest EV market shares (share of its overall auto market) in the world, yet is not a very wealthy nation like Norway of the Netherlands. And it’s EV market share hasn’t popped all of a sudden. The country has been doing well consistently for a while.
Tesla has dropped the price of the Model Y by a few thousand dollars, with the starting price now at $49,990*. Let’s look at a couple of cost of ownership analyses between the Tesla Model Y and he Lexus RX
Norway continues to be a shining star in the electric vehicle world. In the first half of the year, 48% of automobiles sold in the country were fully electric, a global record for EV market share. Plug-in vehicles represented 69% of auto sales, another global record.

Well, there are a few reasons why electric car sales are exploding in the UK, where they now account for nearly 10% of auto sales. I think awareness still hasn’t caught up to the many benefits of an electric car or the potential for financial savings compared to a “similar” fossil-fueled car, but consumers are waking up to these matters. On the latter topic, I’ll try to do my part again to bring some insight to this matter to more Brits.
The UK, Europe’s third largest auto market, saw plug-in electric vehicle market share hit 9.5% in June 2020, up from 2.1% in June 2019. Accumulated EV market share for H1 2020 now stands at 7.7%. The ever popular Tesla Model 3 was the 9th best selling passenger vehicle in June.
Now that we’ve seen Tesla’s actual Q2 2020 production and delivery numbers, the next thing Tesla bears and bulls turn their attention to is trying to determine what the financial impact will look like, and will Tesla make money.
