This is stunning progress for a build which only started groundbreaking in early January. The roofs started going up 25 days ago, and are now well on the way to completion.

Shanghai’s climate sees relatively high rainfall in June through August, but there seems little doubt that the roofs and external walls will be structurally completed before the end of May, and the interior work can progress unimpeded. The Gigafactory represents the largest foreign investment in Shanghai’s history, according to Tencent news.

We know that Tesla plans to start pilot production runs from September onwards, and is targeting the start of full production of the Model 3 for sometime in Q4 this year. CEO Elon Musk said in the recent Q1 earnings call:

“It looks like we’ll reach volume production at the end of this year with, let’s say, more than 1,000 cars a week, maybe 2,000 from Shanghai Giga at the end of this year. That’s what it looks like to be the case right now. If it’s not at the end, it will be shortly thereafter.”
