Small island nations going big on renewable energy: “The Achieving Sustainable Energy for All in Small Island Developing States Conference concluded [recently] with the adoption of the ‘Barbados Declaration‘ calling for universal access to modern and affordable renewable energy services, while protecting environment, ending poverty and creating new opportunities for economic growth.

“The declaration, adopted just weeks before the UN Conference on Sustainable Development ‘Rio+20’, includes an annex with voluntary commitments of 20 Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to take actions toward providing universal access to energy, switching to renewable energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.”

French trying to revive EU carbon tariff idea: “Arnaud Montebourg, the newly-appointed French minister for “industrial revival” who has built a reputation for his fierce attacks against globalisation, has promised to revive old plans by Nicolas Sarkzoy for a carbon tariff at the EU’s borders, an idea previously rejected as protectionist among France’s European partners.”

World Bank says ‘Move Your Ass!’: “World Bank calls on countries to take urgent steps to protect ‘natural capital’…. Putting a monetary value on natural ecosystems is a key step on the road to ‘green’ economic growth, report says.”

UK to support ‘eco innovators’: “£35m for Energy Entrepreneurs Fund… £3m for heat storage innovation… Online funding navigator launched.”

EPA awards $2 to 25 cleantech companies: “The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is awarding $2 million to 25 companies throughout the nation in support of technology development toward sustainable solutions for the environment. The SBIR program is part of EPA’s Technology Innovation for Environmental and Economic Progress: An EPA Roadmap, which focuses on linking research and development, policy and finance.

“EPA’s SBIR program supports small businesses’ development of new technologies addressing key environmental areas. The technological concepts submitted to this year’s competition include drinking water monitoring and treatment, sustainable infrastructures, green building, innovation in manufacturing, greenhouse gas reduction, air pollution monitoring and control and waste monitoring and management.”

GE, Ford, Intel ranked top climate innovators: “Risk analysis company Maplecroft published its latest Climate Innovation Indexes (CIIs) studying the 360 largest US multinational companies and how they manage and adapt to climate change, with a special focus on innovation…. The study revealed GE, Alcoa, Johnson Controls, Ford, Intel, Hess, Air Products, Praxair, United Technologies and Autodesk as leaders in the innovation of clean-tech solutions and new products.”
