I’ll be in Amsterdam again next week for the rEVolution conference. We had a fun CleanTechnica meetup last year on the night before the conference (which is actually how we ended up with Maarten as a superb CleanTechnica contributor). This year, the plan is to have a CleanTechnica meetup on March 13 again.
As you may have noticed, one of my favorite events of 2017 was the first annual rEVolution conference from EVBox. That’s where it was announced that Engie was acquiring EVBox, and there were also presentations from a host of electric vehicle leaders (including — shocker — yours truly).
Is the US on the cusp of a clean energy revolution that will fundamentally change how we live, work, and get around?
How long will it take for electric vehicles to replace fossil-burners? Observing the current auto market, one might conclude that it will take quite a long time. Of over a billion vehicles on our planet’s roads today, only two million are electric, and half of those are in China. Many consumers are not even aware that an EV is a viable option.
Revolutionary change is coming to the auto industry, and no one can say at this point what the transport system of the future will look like. All kinds of theories are flying around — and most of them seem to include Tesla.
The percentage of fully electric and autonomous vehicles on the road will be much higher in 2030 than today, but the majority will still be owned by individuals.
Futurists make predictions. That’s what they do. Sometimes they are right; sometimes they are wrong. As futurists go, Stanford economist and RetinkX founder Tony Seba has a pretty good track record. He predicted the solar energy boom at a time when prices for solar power were 10 times what they are today. His latest report predicts two things. One, he says that by 2030, 95% of people won’t own a private car, killing off the auto industry. Two, he predicts electric vehicles will devastate the global oil industry by the same date.
