For the third year now, the student team from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has taken first place in the “Cruiser Class” at the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia.
The transcontinental World Solar Challenge race in Australia kicked off on Sunday, sending 42 solar-powered cars on a 3,000 kilometer (1,864 mile) race from the north coast of Australia to the south through the outback.
German startup Sono Motors will unveil its Sion, a solar powered car with a range of 75 to 155 miles on July 27.
Previous surveys — including our initial EV driver survey — have found a strong link between driving electric cars and having home solar panels. Yet again, in our 2017 EV driver report, a very large portion of our respondents had home solar panels, which means that they are essentially “fueling” their electric cars with sunshine.
While the integration of solar cells into the roofs of consumer vehicles has always generated a fair amount of criticism — owing to the cost-to-benefit ratio — the idea is still one that grabs many people’s attention.

emember, we aren’t trying to cover 100% of instantaneous electricity use with solar PV, just 100% of the average electricity use for the entire year in a grid-connected system without batteries. For example, if you use 11,000kWh of electricity during the entire year, your PV system will need to generate at least that much energy for the year (and hopefully some extra to offset grid losses). We’ll talk about that more in Part 5.
