Mercedes-Benz announced the start of production for its EQC this week, as chairman of the board Dieter Zetsche announced that, “this is the dawn of a new era at Mercedes.” At a starting price of 59,900 euros, the EQC will be well-equipped, but will initially launch with the preconfigured 400 4MATIC Edition 1886, at a premium price of 84,930 euros.

There’s no secret about it in the electric car world — Norway is the world’s premier country for viewing the electric revolution. Norwegians are also eagerly waiting for all the hot new electric models, to the tune of 400 million Norwegian kroner (or $47.7 million).
With the recent rush by the prestigious European marques to try to grab all of the glittering limelight for their forthcoming SUV-style EVs, a similarly sized offering coming in at half the price is quietly proving its merits with superior efficiency and range. The Kia Niro EV’s early real-world tests show it will have range within 5% to 10% of it’s significantly smaller “efficiency-champ” sibling, the Hyundai Kona, and far better efficiency than any of the purportedly well-engineered European marques. Only the Tesla Model 3 has better efficiency than the Koreans, but that’s not an SUV or CUV.
The Tesla Model 3 has now moved into the top sales ranks of all cars in the US, not just EVs, as CleanTechnica director and chief editor Zachary Shahan wrote recently in “Tesla Model 3 — 7th/8th Best Selling Car In USA — Is In A Class Of Its Own.”
This success and sales volume of the Model 3 in comparison to every other electric vehicle available in the US raises the question: What current or future model will be the next high-volume (“hit”) electric vehicle?
