New York state resident Anthony Sicari has a home solar power and energy storage system that he used to power his home “off- grid” for 33 days. That’s a bit more than one month of electricity self-generation, Tesla Powerwall battery storage, and consumption. To be extra clear, the home only used electricity from the solar panel & battery combination during that period, none from the utility.
Kauai and Florida utility companies are adding more solar power. One expects to get 70% of its electricity from the sun; the other just 8%. Guess which one is a solar power leader?
Hawaiian electric utilities have been forcefully de-linking residential rooftop solar generators at peak hours for several years, but the installation-discouraging practice may fade as refocused utility-scale solar+storage contracts come into effect. Hawai’i’s own Kona Brewing Company on the Big Island is tapping into the power of the sun to allow people to tap into its beer without guilt. The company is installing a new solar-plus-storage installation with the help of EnSync Energy and Holu Energy that will allow the company to crank out nearly 7,000 cans of ‘Liquid Aloha’ per hour.
Tesla is now supplying electricity to the island of Kauai under an agreement with the local utility company. That means Tesla is now a power provider, a role it sees itself adopting more often in the future.
