In relation to a new nationwide survey meant to ascertain the amount of environmental damage done by the last 30 years of rapid growth, China’s environment ministry has revealed that the number of pollution sources within the country has increased by over half in just the last 8 years.
In an example of just how bad air pollution has gotten in parts of China, and why authorities there are incentivizing electric vehicles so aggressively (both personal vehicles and public transit vehicles), a smog “Red Alert” was recently issued in 24 major cities across the northeastern part of the country.
New research from Berkeley Earth has found that air pollution in China is directly implicated in the deaths of roughly 1.6 million people a year.
