The Environment ministers from Scotland and Wales have announced their intention to cooperate on ensuring Brexit will not damage efforts to protect and enhance the UK’s environment.
The latest Energy Barometer from the Energy Institute has concluded that political risk and ramifications from the recent UK Brexit decision must not undermine the larger and essential need of providing reliable energy in a way that also keeps the country’s emissions and prices down.
If implemented, Brexit would de facto mean the UK’s withdrawal from all European treaties, including the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) treaty. Signed in 1957, EURATOM together with the European Economic Community and the already expired European Coal and Steel Community was one of the treaties establishing the EU.
The UK wants to back away from the renewable energy commitments it made to the EU while keeping the benefit of cross-border energy trading. EU leaders are not impressed as Brexit negotiations begin.
