The EV revolution continues to gather momentum as Infiniti says all its cars will be plug-in hybrids or battery electrics, Porsche and Audi say they are raising their EV production goals, and Ducati says it will have an electric motorcycle soon.
For years, we heard and read so much hype about “Tesla killers.” It was like fingernails on a chalkboard from the beginning, because it just didn’t make sense, but it started getting really absurd as you saw the titles pop up frequently for all manner of EVs and concept cars.
The German plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) passenger car market ended the year dropping 10% in December, to 5,711 registrations, with fully electric cars continuing to expand (+12% YoY) while plug-in hybrid electrics couldn’t find a way out of their hole (-35% in December). Fully electrics (BEVs) now clearly outselling plugin hybrids (PHEVs) — 67% PEV segment share for BEVs in December, and well above the 2018 average (53%).
With the recently announced retirement of the 75D variants of the Models S and X, and hints about upcoming V3 Superchargers, Tesla is likely getting battle prepared to match the Taycan’s real-world charging speeds (miles added per minute).
