A lot has changed since I first compiled a list of the 11 electric cars with the most range. Most of those cars no longer make the list. The European passenger plug-in vehicle (PEV) market seems to have reached a turning point, with October growing 56% in comparison to the same period last year, to over 27,000 units. This is the 5th month in the last 6 with +50% growth rates.
In this last sneak peek of the 2017 LA Auto Show, we take a quick look at the Porsche Panamera plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the Hyundai IONIQ, and Volkswagen’s distant electric van.
CleanTechnica earlier noted that the Hyundai IONIQ was a favorite at the Women’s World Car of the Year awards. That triplet of an electrified leader took the “Supreme Award.” It was also a CleanTechnica Car of the Year finalist last year.
An entirely different sector of the transit culture likes IONIQ as well and agrees the IONIQ is a winner. A 100-strong panel of private hire and chauffeur industry operators and experts found the IONIQ was their top choice.
I’ve been intrigued by the Hyundai IONIQ from the first time I heard about it. First of all, there’s a style and range in this electric car that must appeal to a large number of people. There are also three compelling powertrains depending on your needs — three electrified powertrains (my favorite being the IONIQ Electric). All three versions — the Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid, and Electric — were treated as one car for voting purposes, dynamically increasing the EVs appeal in the 8th edition of the Women’s World Car of the Year awards. And that triplet of an electrified leader took the “Supreme Award.”
The European passenger plug-in market returned from the holiday season with fully charged batteries, growing almost a third (+32%) compared to the same period last year by registering some 33,700 units. That’s just a whisker below the all-time record of December 2015 (33,827), which, let’s not forget, was inflated by fiscal changes that happened in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark in January 2016.
Hyundai Motor is now launching its first fully electric carsharing program in the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, according to an email sent to CleanTechnica.
The plug-in market in Europe had a surprisingly strong August month, with over 22,000 registrations, up 68% year over year (YoY). That pushes the plug-in market share up to 1.7%.
Hyundai Motor America has now officially opened a network of over 100 Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations to meet the needs of its employees in the area, according to a new press release from the US arm of the Korean company.
