I just got to season 2 of Game of Thrones. If you are not a fan, no worries, there is only one small reference to GoT at the very end.
Alternative title: “Why it never makes financial sense to buy a gas car again” — but that’s not as pretty a headline.
Congrats to Elon & Tesla for an excellent quarter! These were a unique set of challenging circumstances and Tesla did great. I would like to apologize to Maarten. I shared with him many of the tweets and links on expectations for Tesla’s Q1 results. Enraged, the G.O.M. (“grumpy old man”) valiantly made a prediction. He took the blow instead of me.
In my last article, I gave a brief summary on the pros and cons between the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y, and between the Standard Range and Long Range options. I hope it helped people. I had a comment from Barry asking if I could summarize the debate in a decision tree.
Tesla Model 3 versus Tesla Model Y. And Long Range versus Standard.
I recently ran a Twitter poll to decide what to write about next. The top article the voters asked me to write was an article on how the Tesla Model Standard Range (SR) competes against models from incumbent auto manufacturers. The wonderful thing is that Tesla is now price competitive, without incentives. It is very competitive on a total cost of ownership basis. With incentives and TCO factored in, the Model 3 is tough to beat.
Let’s take a look.
Last week was earnings weeks for Tesla. We are going to change up the report a bit this week and discuss the top 5 FUD headlines before going into the regular #Pravduh about #Tesla report. My “kudos” to CNBC for covering Tesla in every which way possible, some of which I didn’t know existed or wanted to exist. I’ll start with two CNBC pieces.
The Tesla Model 3 was again the top selling car in the US in terms of revenue. For all of 2018, it was #4, just behind the Honda Accord and Honda Civic, based on our estimates.
I received quite a few comments that running Tesla’s finances through a lemonade stand confused readers. I realized two things. People without a financial background loved it. People who fully read Tesla’s SEC filings for a mid-morning snack hated it, or at best tolerated it. 😉
