EVs To Revolutionize Postal Services, & More

Parcel and Postal Expo is the largest event for courier services in Europe and it is taking place in Amsterdam this year. What is different is the new emphasis placed on e-mobility — not only EVs, but also charging infrastructure. Having followed the trade show for a few years now, the shift is visible and e-mobility has never played such a significant role here before. My role has also changed over the years and I am in Amsterdam today with two of my clients that I have the pleasure to provide with consulting services on EV solutions — Voltia and InPost. The big question: what’s on the horizon for electrified postal services?

Why Are EVs The Future For Last-Mile Delivery?

Just few years ago, zero-emission deliveries in cities did not exist at any scale. They were only possible via bicycle couriers, which, of course, were limited the capacity of the backpack. Then at the beginning 2011, things started to change. The first popular EV (electric vehicle) — the Nissan Leaf — reached dealerships and heralded the start of new era. But it wasn’t really ideal for courier deliveries.

Where did we leave off? Yes, it was that memorable night walk in the streets of Venice with Uncle Google. The plan was simple – charge up where you can and wander around sightseeing the north of Italy while heading towards Rome. Things never seem to go as planned, so right after we left — somewhere near Ravenna — one of the motorbikes in our team broke. It simply refused to go any further.
