EV Sales In China, US, & UK Increased In September, Decreased in EU

To me, CleanTechnica seems like the best source of EV sales news. Particularly because Zach regularly gets into the weeds and trends on the sales of various brands and models. Some of CleanTechnica’s contributors from outside the US, such as Jose Pontes and Dr. Maximilian Holland, help fill in the gaps. Because of CleanTechnica’s broader and deeper coverage and the fact that it is not the typical anti-EV mainstream news, it is more balanced and trustworthy. Additionally, social media appears to be overly full of anti-EV sales content.

Rather than trusting only one source, which tends to be problematic, there are benefits to considering multiple perspectives. Rho Motion Press just posted some of its EV sales numbers and the results from the month of September, overall, were encouraging.

Rho Motion Data Manager, Charles Lester, answered some questions for CleanTechnica.

How did China sell 1.1 million EVs in September?

Fundamentally for the Chinese market, from a macro picture, even though the subsidies and incentives have reduced over the last few years, the price gap of EVs vs ICE in many segments (i.e. small cars or SUVs) has decreased significantly, and even in some segments there are cheaper EVs than ICE, alongside the fact there is a far superior coverage of EV charging compared to other regions.

How many did they sell outside of China?

China typically reports exports of NEVs — however, there is a lag from export to being sold in a country — this has not been reported for September so far.

Any idea which EV manufacturer in China sold the most?

In terms of overall sales, BYD sold the most across BEV & PHEV.

Is BYD considering launching a factory in Europe?

BYD is building a facility in Hungary.

How did UK EV sales triple from August?

EV sales tripled compared to August due to new registration plates, a seasonal trend seen in the UK market in both March and September.

The US and Canada market grew 10% from August. What sold well in these markets?

In the USA, Tesla maintains a high market share alongside GM models (mostly the Equinox), and the Honda Prologue.

Chevy Equinox EV sales seem strong. Any idea if those sales will continue at a steady rate?

Due to strong levels of production in Mexico and a positive reaction from the EV, we expect a good end of the year for GM sales in the USA alongside the Blazer.

When did Sierra EV sales begin?

First deliveries of the Sierra EV were reported by GM in Q3 2024 — reported as late August in the USA.

Why did the EU EV sales shrink 4%?

Weaker sales YTD with Germany are a key contributor to this. Germany eliminated its business EV subsidy last September and the private EV subsidy at the end of the year, overall resulting in weaker EV sales for Germany this year. Germany is a large portion of the EU & EFTA & UK market.
