There’s some good news coming out of China for Tesla today. According to a report from Reuters, Tesla China is expected to ramp up to pre-lockdown output by Tuesday (today in China). This just shows that Tesla’s Global Vice President in China, Grace Tao, was correct in her April interview with Xinhua News.

According to the new report by Reuters, Tesla has plans to restore production at Giga Shanghai to the level it was operating before the Covid-19 lockdown by tomorrow. Although this is a day later than its most recent recovery plan, Tesla will still more than double its daily output to 2,600 EVs at Giga Shanghai.

Reuters was able to get access to an internal memo that shared the details. According to the memo, this compares to around 1,000 EVs produced on Monday and would bring Tesla’s weekly output to 16,000 units.

The report noted that Tesla didn’t respond to a request for comment, but we can look back at Tao’s interview in April when she said, “We are extremely confident about China’s development. And we believe that the COVID is just a quiz or challenge. While we are resuming, we see that the industries are still very resilient. And we believe that everything will be back to normal very soon.

The report from Reuters went on to describe the challenges of bringing production back to pre-lockdown levels due to the city’s strict controls imposed in March aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19. Other challenges included not having enough workers, shipping obstacles, and the restriction of supplies of parts, including wire harnesses.

I’m sure that Tesla isn’t the only company in China that is facing similar challenges. And despite the challenges, Tesla is still doing pretty well. Earlier this month, there were two shipments of made-in-China Teslas that left the port of Shanghai bound for Europe.
