Tesla China exported over 4,000 EVs to Belgium over the weekend according to a video of this past Sunday’s shipment leaving the port of Shanghai. The video was shared by 42How, which cited Kankanews as the source.

According to Kankanews, there were two separate batches. The first one had 4,767 EVs. And then this second batch was shipped within a week of the first.

There is another video with a bit more information and an interview by Dragon TV with a Chinese customs official.

Twitter user @Berlinergy shared a video on May 15 with a few more details. The video they shared shows the ship being loaded in Shanghai and that the ship is going to Zeebrugge, Belgium. According to the video shared by @Berlinergy, which was a clip of Dongfang TV, Tesla loaded 4,767 EVs on the ship. The translated caption of the video read:

“As one of the first batches of white list enterprises to resume work and production in Shanghai, Tesla has continuously accelerated the delivery speed of orders since the resumption of work on April 19, striving to make up for the early production tasks.

“After the resumption of work on May 11, the first batch of4,767 electric vehicles were shipped and exported, and this morning there were more than 4,000 vehicles. The electric cars will be shipped out of the port and this is the second full ship of electric cars exported from Tesla’s Shanghai factory in less than a week.”

The news anchor then included a report from Dragon TV’s Shen Chunchun who was reporting from the Nangang Dock in Shanghai. Chunchun described a steady stream of Teslas on their way to the ship which docked the previous day to allow for authorities to go through relevant procedures. He also interviewed an official with Yangshan Customs.

“Tesla is exporting this car in a steady stream and this week it’s the second one on a roll-off ship. In order to help these cars export as soon as possible, our Yangshan Customs has also done a lot of work.”

Chunchun asked Mr. Wang, an official from Yangshan Customs, how the officials were helping Tesla to export the EVs smoothly. Mr. Wang explained,

“In late March, Shanghai Customs entered the stage of static management. And then during the static administration, we have a customs officer assistant at the unit 24 hours.

“Well, when a company has a problem with the customs clearance industry, they contact our customs officers through this special line. The last exported Tesla roll-on-roll-off ship left on the 11th.”

Once the ship cleared, he explained, customs received a notice and sent officials to the Nangang wharf at eight in the evening. Chunchun asked Mr. Wang what the capacity of the ship was and the current plan for the ship. Mr. Wang answered,

“The capacity of this ship is 4,000. Four or four thousand more Tesla electric cars for export.”

@Berlinergy also gave an approximate date for when the ship with over 4,000 Teslas would reach Belgium. According to German sources, it might arrive around June 14.

Teslarati pointed out that although Tesla is only at 45% capacity, it’s quite impressive that Tesla China is already able to ship vehicles to foreign territories. Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai is only operating with one shift of employees and there have been reports of a second shift starting this week.

I think this bit of news reflects Tesla China Vice President Grace Tao’s statement given in an interview in April. She said,

“We did lose a lot of important days of production … a lot of suppliers lost many days of production. But Giga Shanghai is coming back with a vengeance. We will see a record output … this quarter.”
