Mike and Ashiss Dash, who goes by Dash, launch this podcast by talking about Infosys’ work as a major Indian service provider of technical services globally. Because of the digital transformation happening around the world, Dash explains that Infosys has been working to bring digital technologies to help clients adapt into the future. This includes working on goals related to sustainability and climate change.
Mike is particularly interested in the green technology that Infosys has been focused on, and the fact that as a company operating in multiple countries, they are working to meet climate change standards for the planet themselves. In 2019, they won the United Nations Global Climate Action Award and recently joined Amazon’s climate pledge, for which they have committed to become “net zero” 10 years earlier than originally planned. As Dash explains, Infosys has spearheaded initiatives on energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, and many other ways to reduce their carbon footprint.
For Dash, it has been important that Infosys is a model of sustainability that they can also show their clients. Infosys does a lot of work in green technology and realized, as Dash notes, that they could deploy the technology they were bringing to market for others, on themselves. He believes they have the ability to invest in setting a high standard for other companies seeking to become more sustainable.
Mike and Dash transition into talking about India as a whole and the ways in which energy consumption has increased and remote regions have been demanding more access to electricity. Dash believes that there is an opportunity in some places to “leap frog” and jump directly to renewable energy to meet those energy needs. It does not take too much effort to set up rooftop solar and a battery, he says, and it provides a much better alternative to being dependent on the traditional grid. Dash also notes that both solar and wind have been growing rapidly in India and there is an opportunity for global players to set up renewable and reliable power to help the economy and the planet.
Mike and Dash talk more about what sets Infosys apart from its competitors. According to Dash, Infosys has a strong sense of values related to climate action and believes as a business that they need to be committed to the local community, the planet, and shared resources. They also focus on building relationships and trust with clients through their commitment to the cause. They are careful with practicing what they preach to do the right thing and demonstrate success in their own company through continuous improvement of their own sustainability initiatives, he explains.
Mike and Dash go further into more technical aspects of the company, talking about Infosys’ work around wildfires and their deployment of technology that helps track and predict areas of risk. Dash walks through the technology behind wildfires and crises that help save lives, analyse and provide feedback to predict future challenges.
Mike and Dash wrap up this episode with a discussion on machine learning and the rapid transformation of technologies. Dash explains that one of Infosys’ strengths is that it is investing in training its employees, putting a lot of effort into training modules in different technologies. Infosys has also established innovation hubs and design studios around the world that focus on technology training and problem solving. He believes that this component is critical within Infosys because of the rapidly changing landscape of sustainability and technology.
Dash leaves the audience by appealing to a broader need for commitment to climate action. There is a responsibility, he says, for each person to play their part in advancing sustainability and green solutions.
