We’re here with another episode of Tesla Inside Out, a series on our CleanTech Talk podcast channel. This one is a special “Energy Independence Weekend” episode focused on a mix of the big EV news this year (more potent this week than ever) and David Havasi’s history in the industry (in Tesla from 2012–2019 and outside of it since then).

Tesla’s momentous and improbable growth from its IPO a decade ago to its hotly popping stock price this week, and this year more broadly. David relays some stories about the moment 10 years ago, his start at Tesla, and how it all feels looking back on that time from right now.

We also talked a bit about how Tesla CEO Elon Musk envisions the future of the company, how he sets what seems like crazy long-term goals, talks about them sort of crunching the time down in his head, but then eventually achieves them at Tesla (and elsewhere).

David reflected a bit on the dramatic rise in Tesla’s valuation, in particular as that relates to surpassing the largest automakers in the world in market cap, surpassing ExxonMobil in market cap, and surpassing Disney in market cap.

David also offered some interesting theories on how Tesla is now reaching customers. He noted that whereas in the past many people discovered the stock through the product, now they are probably discovering the cars through the stock.

We then transitioned into a much longer discussion about the challenges large traditional automakers now face, how they are trying to address them, the cultural barriers and opportunities, and more. We look a bit at the rise in EV adoption — EV market share especially — in Europe, and also relate that to a more focused discussion on the story at Ford, GM, and Volkswagen in the United States. This is the bulk of this podcast and the most interesting part, in my opinion. I highly recommend you listen!

And happy Energy Independence Weekend!

Apologies on the audio on my end on this one. We had serious technical issues, I thought we found a solution, but then it turned out that it led to bad audio. That won’t happen again.
