Unconferences Coming Up In San Francisco

As you might imagine, those of us behind Important Media, CleanTechnica’s parent company, spend most of our time online. But over the past year, we’ve branched out into a few events to help bring the sustainability conversation to cities around the globe.

As you might imagine, those of us behind Important Media, CleanTechnica’s parent company, spend most of our time behind computers. But over the past year, we’ve branched out into a few events to help bring the sustainability conversation to cities around the globe.

Unconference success!

As part of that, we are hosting a series of Unconferences, including some Sustainability-oriented events, as well as our first ever Women’s Unconference. These conferences will be held in San Francisco, California, over the coming few weeks. The three upcoming events are:

Mini Sustainability Unconference: Monday, April 17, 5:30pm — 8:30pm

Sustainability Unconference: Saturday, May 6, 9:30am — 4:30pm

Mini Women’s Unconference: Wednesday, May 3, 5:30pm — 8:30pm

The Sustainability Unconference is focused on green business and sustainability work, while the Women’s Unconference is focused on bringing women together to focus on political activism, collaborative problem solving, business networking, and positive inspiration.

Group discussions about topics that are important locally–decided on by the attendees.

What’s an unconference?

An unconference is a highly interactive and engaging event that allows the participants to crowdsource the agenda for the day. Each attendee offers discussion or workshop ideas to the group, and sessions are selected by vote. This open-space technology style allows everyone to share the skills and ideas they are most passionate about, whether that’s grassroots activism, messaging for environmental organizations, sustainable branding, or women in leadership. Here’s a sample of an event’s agenda after the morning agenda-building session and voting was completed. Each breakout room gets its own local, sustainable sponsor:

Both events include ample time for engaging group discussions and structured networking, as well as the opportunity to indulge in organic food and drinks. This is a great way to learn from your peers, grow a greener business, and build a stronger and more sustainable community.

We are grateful to our sponsors for the upcoming events, including New Resource Bank, Imperfect Produce, Pono Home, Cost of Solar, and Mobile Solutions.

When is this coming to my town?

We’re actually looking to license the brand for this to allow individuals and groups around the world to run these fun events to empower change in their community and make some money to boot. Check out the “hosting an unconference” link for more info. We are looking for partners to host unconferences around the globe! We look forward to unconferencing with you soon!

Shared discussions, facilitated networking, which is great for introverts AND extroverts.

I don't like paywalls. You don't like paywalls. Who likes paywalls? Here at CleanTechnica, we implemented a limited paywall for a while, but it always felt wrong — and it was always tough to decide what we should put behind there. In theory, your most exclusive and best content goes behind a paywall. But then fewer people read it! We just don't like paywalls, and so we've decided to ditch ours. Unfortunately, the media business is still a tough, cut-throat business with tiny margins. It's a never-ending Olympic challenge to stay above water or even perhaps — gasp — grow. So ...
