EV News Roundup (+ 400-Mile Tesla Roadster Comment Opportunity)

First of all, we published a guest article the other day regarding a Tesla Roadster battery pack upgrade that did something very weird. I have no idea why, but there was no commenting section under the article. The article was very popular, and I’m sure it would have generated a lot of discussion. I know many of the people who read the article won’t see this one, but for those of you who do and who had something to say about it, please feel free to discuss under this article.

Now, on to another electrified vehicle news roundup. Aside from all of our EV stories, here are some from our favorite EV sites:


The stock market hasn’t been hot lately, but TSLA is. Continuing to drive those who are short on TSLA crazy, the electric vehicle rock star keeps climbing on up.

The Tesla and Toyota clash is an interesting one. We first portrayed it as Toyota not having much of a clue about the EV revolution, then Elon Musk simply stated that, since Tesla didn’t have enough batteries for its products, it was discontinuing its partnership with Toyota for the time being. But there may really be more to it than that.

After 30,000+ miles and 17 months, the Edmunds staff say that the Tesla Model S is “hard to recommend.” As Chris says, “Ouch.”

Tesla continues its trek towards world domination nonetheless, with deliveries of the Model S beginning in Hong Kong, going to rabid Chinese billionaires and movie stars.

Need mo space! Fast-growing electric car manufacturers don’t just need more factory space — they also need more office space. (In other words, a lot of people really don’t care what Edmunds thinks.)

Tesla is quite the job-creator, as yet another piece explores in a bit more depth.

Tesla revenue and production are up, of course, resulting in a strong second quarter (but still a net loss based on GAAP reporting).

Someone thinks they’ve sketched the Tesla Model C. Others are not so sure…

Hey, what ever happened to the Tesla battery swap? Good question… (Interestingly, I just now seeing that I am referenced in this piece.)

I encouraged Bob Tregilius to take some shots of a potential Tesla Gigafactory site after he mentioned that he thought there was work in progress there. He did so and also wrote up a piece on it (which we didn’t bid high enough to get published here on CleanTechnica).

Tesla & Google may own the future. It’s called foresight and innovation.

German EV Models

The Volkswagen e-Golf parks and charges itself. Smart little bugger, it is.

A one-of-a-kind BMW i8 is set to debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this weekend. It will also be the first BMW i8 sold in the USA.

BMW i3s may not have Superchargers, but at least they can now be supported by fast chargers.

BMW is reportedly planning a BMW i9 supercar, as if the i8 wasn’t expensive enough.

Could the next BMW i3 be competition for the Tesla Model III? Teslarati thinks so.

Porsche, meanwhile, is planning to offer a plug-in version of its 2015 Porsche Cayenne.

This electric VW Beetle is a retrofit, but it’s still German (I guess) and awesome. (Note: we covered this car/company over a year ago.)

Electric Transit

Manchester, home of a couple of the world’s top football (aka soccer) teams, has gotten its first electric buses. More to come.

E-rickshaws could help transform transportation (and air) in India… with a little help from regulation.

The 100% electric COMET is looking to help cut pollution in the Philippines.

Other Goodies

Hollywood Electrics now sells Brammo electric motorcycles. Actually, it sells them again.

Harley-Davidson and Stellar Solar team up to power an electric motorcycle tour with solar power.

A Stanford team has developed a stable lithium ion anode, which they refer to as the “holy grail” of battery design.

PSG&E is incentivizing New Jersey businesses, trying to get them to install more “smart” charging stations for electrified vehicles.

The lithium-ion battery market will hit $24 billion in 2023. So says Navigant Research, at least.

Lower-income residents of California may soon see bigger EV incentives than the typical Californian.

The Cadillac ELR — not for those who don’t have money to throw away on shiny, overpriced objects — is going to get wireless charging via Plugless Power.

Rimac, Croatian maker of a hot electric supercar, recently upgraded a fan’s wheelchair.

Chip Yates set 5 electric airplane records last year, and they are now official.

33,000+ Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrids have now been sold… 0 in the US.

    Just figured it out I think. The new hydrogen car by Toyota selling for 70,000 will have a 400 mile range. Tesla must take the rug out from under their feet. Both cars will be heavily subsidized to make a point. Toyota will lose face!

      I doubt the Roadster will need to be subsidized. Given that the previous Roadster sold for over $100k and the S is selling for $70k I would imagine that along with the falling cost of batteries $100k or a bit more would cover the new Roadster production cost and larger battery pack.

      A lot of the R&D costs would be shared with other EV models. We’re talking mostly a unique body style.

      I do agree that there’s a good chance that the 400 mile Roadster is an “in your eye”.

    Glad that you noticed the Tesla Roadster comment glitch because there was something that I thought might have interested others.
    This past spring (April or May?) on the Tesla website they had four Roadsters for sale that were prior test/loaner vehicles. At the time the prices and low miles seemed reasonable to me and if I remember right were in the 50-70,000$ range with recorded miles all under 30,000. Was a very tempting offer especially with the warranties being extended, but the two seat limit would just make it more of a toy for myself rather than a usable vehicle for the family. Can see how these could work out great for some people though, with the addition of the extra range and access to the supercharger network being a big plus. Wonder if people that spring for the cost of these new packs will be given free access like the Model S owners?

      Unfortunate more people haven’t chimed in here about that story. I’m positive it would have gotten a lot of comments if the system didn’t go wonky.

        Getting the access is my guess too, with Musk talking about a big bonus for Roadster owners at last springs shareholder meeting, just haven’t seen confirmation yet.
        And agreed about others chiming in if the opportunity had been there, maybe it will happen during the week with this one showing up on the weekend
