Swiss investment banking giant UBS revealed this week that it has decided to further tighten its standards on coal financing transactions, ruling out project-level finance to new coal-fired power plants around the world, at the same time as the bank seeks to double penetration of sustainable investments by 2020.
The Financial Times dove into the UBS teardown of the Tesla Model 3 to get a read on whether it is truly a revolutionary vehicle that represents a paradigm shift for the automotive industry or if it is simply an evolutionary car that takes the next logical step forward for the industry.
An analysis by UBS finds Tesla’s cost of producing EV batteries is 20% less than its nearest competitor, a clear advantage for Tesla going forward.
CleanTechnica’s Maarten Vinkhuyzen recently took a deep dive into a UBS report about the Tesla Model 3. The finding was that the report demonstrated tremendous ignorance at best or intentionally misleading nonsense at worst.
Tesla has a long history of in-sourcing production. It started with the idea of following the Apple model. That meant doing the design itself, finding factories which could make it, having no production itself — only design, marketing, and sales. That didn’t work — nobody did know how to make an electric car.
Analysts for UBS have torn apart a perfectly good Chevy Bolt to see how it is put together. What they found led them to make this rather startling announcement: the “total cost of consumer ownership [of electric cars] can reach parity with combustion engines from 2018.” Notice that doesn’t mean an electric car and a conventional car will cost the same to buy new. It means they will cost the same to own, figuring in maintenance, cost of fuel, insurance, and all the other factors that are part of the total cost of ownership.
According to an article on CNBC, UBS analyst Colin Langan predicts that “Tesla will have to invest up to an additional $8 billion in its network of high-speed charging stations in the U.S. alone if it wants to make recharging a car as convenient as filling the gas tank.”
