While it’s easy to criticize Tesla’s goals, imagination and creativity point to the all-electric company’s innovation producing substantial results.
Tesla broke the news on its blog today that it would be using lease returns from its new Tesla Model 3 lease program in “the Tesla ride-hailing network.” The blog post is the second confirmation that Tesla will actually own and operate its own fleet of fully autonomous ride-hailing vehicles, with the first note along these lines coming years ago.

It’s been a rough few weeks for boosters of vehicle autonomy. In March, one of Uber’s pilot autonomous vehicles killed pedestrian Elaine Herzberg while she was crossing the street. A few days later, Walter Huang died when his Model X hit a highway barrier in California with the Autopilot system engaged. Mr. Huang was not the first Autopilot-related fatality: in 2016, Joshua Brown was killed in a crash while his Model S was in Autopilot mode (an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration “did not identify any defects in the design or performance” of Autopilot).
Tesla is reportedly now working with the chip manufacturer AMD on the development of its own self-driving tech management AI chip, according to an unnamed source quoted by CNBC in a recent article.
The Premier of Victoria reports that 90% of auto accidents result from human error. The number of lives that will be saved from good autonomous features in cars, and finally fully self-driving vehicles, is hard to estimate, but imagine the avoided paralysis, death, lost organs, etc., from the reduction in accidents.
