There are various phrases that try to remind us that big-picture topics don’t always dominate our lives. In fact, little things of daily life can influence us on a grand scale. With many little things, it wouldn’t hurt us to pause and appreciate them a little more.
Yesterday, I wrote about the 4 top reasons we just bought a Tesla Model 3 and decided to say goodbye to a 2015 BMW i3 REx we loved. Below are 3 more reasons — not as big as the core 4 but notable nonetheless. Were any of these critical in deciding to bring home a Model 3? No, but they were big improvements over the i3 that continually came to mind and helped build the case for the switch. In our first day with the car, each of them was already noticed and appreciated.
Editor’s note: Aside from the points made in the article below, something that I think non-Tesla drivers can’t appreciate (until they experience it in a Tesla) is Tesla’s navigation system for road trips. The brilliant navigation system plans out your trip and tells you where to charge and for how long. I drove a Model S from Poland to Paris and back, and my conclusion after (or during) the trip was that this navigation system actually made the journey simpler and less stressful than it would have been in a gasoline or diesel vehicle.
Tesla posted a new video to its YouTube account that shows yet another perfect family in their perfectly clean Tesla Model S taking a road trip to a ski resort in Austria for vacation. My Tesla Model 3 never seems to be clean, with random crayons, papers, books, and toy parts in every crevice, but that’s another story. The quick video (below) made me reflect on one of the huge benefits of Tesla’s navigation system compared to the ones from other automakers: automatic charging stop integration.
Back in 2015, we bought a 2013 Tesla Model S and purposely purchased it from the Tesla Service Center in Columbus, Ohio, even though we live in California. It wasn’t the closest location to our home in Ventura, but it gave me the opportunity to see how the car and Tesla’s Supercharger network stacked up to the hype when put to the test.

This story is about Tesla’s moats, but I don’t mean to imply that Buffett would invest in Tesla. Tesla is far from the value investments of the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio. Rather, Buffett’s comments are to demonstrate the importance of moats. Morningstar even has a guide called Why Moats Matter. Understanding the moats a business employs is clearly important to understanding the business and its future.
