Sources tell The Daily Kanban that Tesla is soliciting quotes from automotive suppliers for the Model Y and telling them to expect production to begin in 2020. Is there any truth to the rumors?

Most of you reading this are in agreement: electric vehicles will upend the conventional vehicle industry within the next 50 10–20 years. The pollution industry in the world of transport will be destroyed. Gasmobiles stinking up cities, garages, lungs, hearts, and minds will be retiring to scrapyards and history books. But the endgame is sort of boring — yes, awesome, but boring since it is the end of it all.
Volkswagen Group isn’t fooling around any longer, in my opinion. There’s plenty of room to remain cynical, but Volkswagen Group indicated yesterday that it is putting genuine skin in the game — big time.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has projected demand of around 700,000 cars a year for the Tesla Model 3. Some of you think that’s optimistic. Some of you think it’s pessimistic. Some of you probably wouldn’t bet one way or the other. Below are a few considerations on each side of the coin.
Coming off a landmark Tesla Model 3 launch event, Elon Musk sounded upbeat, positive and somewhat relieved on Tesla’s recent conference call discussing the company’s second quarter financial results*. He explained that this was: “maybe the best I’ve ever felt about Tesla. Last week stressed the hell out of me but I really think this is probably the best I’ve ever felt about the company.” At one point, Elon said bluntly: “At a systemic level we are substantially more efficient than other carmakers.”
