What Happens When The Oil Economy Collapses?
The question is simple and stark, but there will be a gradient of effects, and side-effects, and after-effects. As the oil economy collapses, the world will change. And it will change a great deal.

One of the first articles I published after the US presidential election in November was this one: “How China (+ Russia) Could Shift USA From #1 To #2 (Or Lower), Via Trump Naivety.” From that article:
The Trump & Russian chaos — no matter how extensive it is and where it goes — is a tiny preview of the massive disruption we have coming as the global carbon bubble pops.
Nearly a week ago, an editorial in Der Spiegel, Germany’s top news magazine, called for the impeachment of Donald Trump, calling him a laughing stock and a danger to the world. It’s not often for an editor of a foreign magazine to lambaste the leader of another country but these are not normal times.
Donald Trump’s election was a somewhat shocking and somewhat obvious result. Shocking, in part, because Donald Trump was so thoroughly unqualified for the job, and also in part because his life and words were so contradictory to the ideals espoused by the Christian base Republican politicians focus so much attention and messaging on.
Remember that there was a strong #NeverTrump campaign within the Republican Party during the primaries, and even running into the general election. Former Republican presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush reportedly did not even vote for Trump in the general election. I’m sure some other prominent Republicans didn’t either. Seasoned politicians who know how government and politics work could see the train wreck coming 5 miles away.
When you think of healthy democracies, you definitely think of petrostates, right? The question is, is the Republican Party treating the US as a petrostate?
Tesla is reportedly in the process of securing real estate in Moscow and St. Petersburg for use as new showrooms and service centers, according to recent reports. Presumably, the company is working to establish a presence in the market before the release of the Model 3. Likely sites for Tesla locations are reportedly the “Atrium” and “Vremena Goda” in Moscow.
On Tuesday, March 7th, the Trump administration will reverse the Obama administration’s Final Determination requiring automakers meet an average 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, according to Inside EPA.
An alliance of manufacturers had urged protection for fuel inefficiency in a letter to Trump EPA administrator Scott Pruitt in February, and the industry request is one of hundreds of industry-requested rollbacks in Obama rules that are now on the chopping block, according to the New York Times.
For years, many Republicans falsely claimed that Obama was not born in the US (and thus wasn’t our legitimate president), that he’s Muslim (he’s actually Christian), that he hates America (so obviously absurd that the claim baffles the mind), etc., etc. All the while, Obama maintained his composure and was “presidential” for his entire 8 years as president. Try to imagine for a minute if he wasn’t. And try to imagine he had serious conflicts of interest and strong ties to anti-democratic, anti-USA countries. What would the haters have been yelling if he crossed the lines Trump has crossed?
