A couple in California has been awarded more than $2 billion in damages for health issues a jury found were caused by Roundup, a week killer manufactured by Monsanto. That’s a lot of money, but it’s unlikely anyone would want to switch places with the plaintiffs.
A number of interesting documents were released on Tuesday as part of an ongoing lawsuit against Monsanto. Not our typical beat, this seemed worth drawing attention to here on CleanTechnica anyway. Overall, these documents seem to paint a pretty clear picture of a company working to bend the rules to suit its best interests, and also one where there was clear internal “debate” about the actual safety of its best-selling product, Roundup.
The US state of California will be adding the widely used herbicide glyphosate — the so-called “active ingredient” in Monsanto’s most popular weedkiller, Roundup — to its official list of chemicals that are known to cause cancer, according to recent reports.
Newly unsealed documents relating to a lawsuit against Monsanto have revealed that the US EPA official who was in charge of evaluating the cancer risk of Monsanto’s Roundup product stated in a conversation with a company exec that he would try to get an investigation started by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) “killed.”
And … that he “should get a medal” for doing so.
