The Metals Company and Allseas have announced the successful deepwater commissioning of its riser pipe and jumper hose. These tools are designed to lift polymetallic nodules from the seafloor to the surface. The nodules typically fit inside the palm of your hand (they sent me one in 2020 as a … [continued]
We don’t need nickel from Russia. There is a critical need for nickel and other EV battery metals worldwide, but we don’t need to get it from Russia. In March 2022, Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas shared worries about Russia’s outsized role in the nickel supply chain for EVs. CNBC’s Phil … [continued]
The United States imports many of the minerals used in EV batteries, such as cobalt, graphite, lithium, manganese, and nickel, with lithium being the predominant mineral. Although use of these minerals is not restricted to battery production for EVs, they are nonetheless important for meeting the increasing demand for EV … [continued]
By Professor Sebastien Farnaud There are more than 1.4 billion cars in the world today, and that number could double by 2036. If all those cars burn petrol or diesel, the climate consequences will be dire. Electric cars emit fewer air pollutants and if they’re powered by renewable energy, driving one wouldn’t add … [continued]
BASF has announced plans for a new battery recycling prototype plant in Schwarzheide, which is in the southern part of Brandenburg, Germany, near the Schwarze Elster river. The new plant will be located at the site of its cathode active materials (CAM) plant. BASF stated that the new prototype plant … [continued]
During Tesla’s recent Battery Day presentation, CEO Elon Musk shared this Tesla goal: “We want to try to replace at least 1% of the total vehicle fleet on earth, which is about 2 billion vehicles. So, long term, we want to try and make about 20 million vehicles a year.”
Elon Musk is pushing the vehicle manufacture industry to seek out more high purity manganese to power its vehicles.
As the world transitions to electric vehicle (EV) dominance, manganese will play a key role in EV production. At Tesla’s Battery Day 2020, Musk said Tesla’s next generation EV batteries will contain 1/3 manganese.
Investments in European EV and battery supply chains are underway right now, and the continent has emerged as a major electric vehicle production hub. While we know lithium is a major driver of EV growth, high purity manganese is another battery metal that will play a key role in the transition.
DeepGreen is a deep-sea mining company with a vision of a zero-carbon, circular economy. Its goal is to source metals with the least environmental and societal impact.
