Germany’s Federal Network Agency finally announced the winners last week of its first special tender for large-scale solar PV that was held in early March, in which 121 contracts were awarded totaling 505 megawatts (MW) of capacity at an average price of €0.065 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
The European Union installed 8 gigawatts (GW) of new solar capacity in 2018, according to the region’s solar trade body SolarPower Europe, an increase of 36% over 2017 figures.
For the second time this year, Germany has awarded all available capacity from its latest mixed wind and solar renewable energy auction to large-scale solar projects, awarding a total combined capacity of 201 megawatts (MW).
With Germany set to phase out its nuclear capacity by 2022, leading analysts GlobalData predicts that non-hydro renewables will almost exclusively fill the remaining capacity, and by 2030 will contribute over 70% to the country’s power mix.
