Daimler and ABB are moving ahead with plans to produce electric heavy duty trucks. Daimler will convert its Freightliner factory in Portland, Oregon to begin manufacturing them in 2021.
Freightliner Trucks took to the stage recently to take the wraps off of two new fully-electric truck offerings. The Freightliner eCascadia is a heavy-duty truck (>15 t GVW), while the Freightliner eM2 106 is a medium-duty truck (9 to 12 t GVW), and the company says they mark the beginning of a new era in trucking.
Daimler Trucks has now begun testing semi-truck platooning tech in Japan — building on earlier work in Europe — via the FUSO brand we’ve reported on a few times.
In a move that’s sure to put a smile on Elon Musk’s face, Daimler has presented its own fully electric urban delivery truck in advance of Tesla’s truck event. The electric truck is capable of hauling up to 26 tons.
Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, decided to invest in the global truck business at the beginning of the 21st century. Today, it has 5 brands in its portfolio — Mercedes-Benz Trucks, Freightliner Trucks, Mitsubishi FUSO, Western Star, and BharatBenz. Freightliner has a 40% share of the heavy truck market in the US. But Tesla is planning to disrupt that market with the Tesla Semi electric truck due to be unveiled in September.
