It’s been a few years since Harley-Davidson (HD) dangled an electric motorcycle (e-motorcycle) project called LiveWire in front of our faces. Sadly, years later, there is still nothing to show for it. It’s hard to figure out how serious HD is with its electric project.
Today, Zero Motorcycles released its 2018 models. While they don’t look much different from the 2017s on the outside (except the gorgeous new silver paint!), it’s what’s inside that counts. Like — 10% longer range thanks to new battery chemistry on all ZF7.2 and ZF14.4 models! Zero is also offering quick charging — 6 times faster, thanks to the 6kW charge tank accessory for S, SR, DS, and DSR models.

Electric single-seater with Formula E — check. Electric rally racing Paris-Dakar and Baja, California — check. Electric Hillclimb Pikes Peak — check. Isle of Man TT Zero — check. Electric sedan racing — almost check. So when are we finally going to have an electric MotoGP? By 2019!

As I discussed in my last article on the subject, the 2017 Zero Motorcycles lineup is a big improvement over the lineup from earlier years — which is really saying something, as the company is at the top of the industry, making really high-quality but affordable electric motorcycles.
The big news is that all Zero electric motorcycle models now come with a new IPM (Internal Permanent Magnet) motor. A new higher amperage motor controller permits faster acceleration times. The drive belt is now slightly wider to accommodate the extra torque of the IPM motor.
In 2012 and 2013, electric vehicles saw a tipping point in terms of performance. That’s when they started winning or becoming seriously competitive in multiple different international competitions, after only 1–3 years of experience compared to decades for the gas competitors.
