The European passenger plug-in market had some 37,000 registrations in May, growing 28% compared to the same period last year, a good performance considering the stagnating performance (+0.04%) of the overall market.
The German plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market continues on the right track in May, having registered 7,899 units. Fully electric vehicles (BEVs) grew at a faster pace (+100% year over year) than plug-in hybrids (+33%). In May, the PEV share was at 2.4%, with BEVs alone hitting 1.4%, keeping the 2019 plug-in share at 2.5% (1.5% BEV).
Two years ago I thought the long wait for the Renault-Nissan Alliance was over. There was a new Zoe40 launched just before the Chevy Bolt came to market, and a new Leaf coming that summer. Accompanied by a few other releases, I thought it was time to announce the Renault-Nissan Alliance was coming out of stealth mode. That was the meme of those days — EV makers coming out of stealth mode.
My increasingly good friend Paul Fosse wrote an article yesterday giving 5 reasons to buy a Tesla before July 1. At the end of the article, he linked to a 2016 article of mine that I had forgotten about. It’s a simple listicle but it’s actually one of my favorite articles. The French plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market scored 4,051 registrations in May, up 34% year over year (YoY), with fully electric cars (+36%) growing faster than plug-in hybrids (30%). All-electric cars (BEVs) represented 71% of all plug-in sales.
For several years now, I’ve felt both guilt and embarrassment for not driving an EV. I wonder how many other CleanTechnica readers who don’t own an EV yet, who own an ICE (internal combustion engine) car, feel similarly.
The Dutch plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market had another positive month in May, with 2,688 plug-in vehicle registrations — up 193% year over year (YoY). That translated into a PEV share of 7.3% on the broader auto market. The year-to-date (YTD) count is now up to 15,537 units, with the 2019 PEV share at 8.3%, well above the 6% of last year.
As every Tesla driver knows, electric vehicles are more reliable, more convenient, cheaper to operate, safer and more fun to drive than legacy vehicles. However, the most important reason for the transition to electric driving is to reduce the use of polluting petroleum products. As EVs proliferate, consumption of gasoline is expected to fall. It’s still very early days, but that trend is already observable.
There is no other reason for me to report on the Dutch sales than that it is my home market, and I have the numbers.
