The European passenger plug-in car market started the 2018 season with almost 26,000 registrations, growing 36% compared to the same period last year, a promising start that unfortunately is being made for the most part thanks to growth in plug-in hybrids (+44% year over year). In fact, plug-in hybrids now represent more than half (53%) of deliveries.

There are both similarities and differences that stood out after doing so, but there’s basically one key take-home point. Hyundai Motor Company and Aurora, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, have announced a strategic partnership to bring self-driving Hyundai vehicles to market by 2021. You may not recognize the name Aurora yet, but you probably recognize the name of its CEO, Chris Urmson, who was the CTO of self-driving cars at Google for several years. His fellow co-founders at Aurora are Sterling Anderson, who was most recently director of Tesla Autopilot, and Drew Bagnell, who was previously Uber’s autonomy and perception lead.

The European passenger plug-in vehicle market had its best not-last-month-of-quarter record in November, with over 29,000 vehicles delivered to happy customers. This is the 7th time in the last 8 months that we saw +50% growth rates.
The real-world range and energy efficiency of 8 plug-in electric vehicles were tested earlier this month by the German auto industry news source Auto Bild. Unsurprisingly, the comparison confirmed much of what had already been known, but it also provided for some data points.
