As I noted in my prior article, when I wrote the first article in this series, I intended to take a quick historical look at one industry and then move on to diving into some of today’s automakers to see what risk the EV revolution had to their business. I still do intend to do that, but the comments in the first article pointing out flaws with the Kodak comparison made me want to do some further dives into historical industry disruptions.

In this article, I’ll talk about how Tesla’s announcement of its CyberTruck will hurt sales of other pickup trucks, even before the truck ships its first unit. For better or worse, consumers (also known as “people”) typically organize products in their heads using simple descriptors or tags. Pre-Tesla, electric cars were not that well known. Among those who knew what an electric car was, the prevailing summary of them was that they were slow like golf carts, geeky, and only for a certain (weird) kind of person. Elon Musk and other early birds at Tesla blew those stereotypes out of the water.
