Volkswagen Will Unveil 7-Passenger ID Roomzz Electric SUV At Shanghai Show

Predicting the future is hard, but when it comes to predicting the names of future electric cars from Volkswagen’s new ID division, it’s pretty simple. Just think of a common word and add a couple of Zs. We know about the ID Buzz electric bus and the ID Crozz midsize SUV. On April 16 in Shanghai, Volkswagen will unveil yet another ID badged vehicle, this one called Roomzz.

Like all the other concepts revealed so far, the latest member of the ID family will be built on the almost infinitely adaptable MEB platform, which can be squeezed down for tiny cars and scaled up for larger cars.

At present, the largest vehicle in the ID family, which includes a variety of hatchback sedans as well as the adorable dune buggy concept shown in Geneva, is the ID Buzz microbus variant that measures 198.7 inches in length. A cargo version of that vehicle is fitted with a 111 kWh battery. Is that a clue to what size battery the Roomzz might have? If so, the new car certainly won’t win any low price contests.

Details are few at this point. Motor Authority says the Roomzz will resemble the midsize Crozz SUV but with a longer wheelbase and a higher rear roof for more cargo and passenger room. Two electric motors with a total of around 370 horsepower are rumored along with a range of about 340 miles.

In a press release, Volkswagen says the Roomzz will offer “completely new seat configurations, high-quality materials and customizable light.” It also says it will come with a Pilot feature that will allow it to operate “without an active driver” in Level 4 autonomous mode.

The Volkswagen Atlas 7-passenger SUV has been a sales hit in America. The ability to seat seven people seems to be one of the features SUV shoppers are looking for today. Volkswagen clearly intends to make sure they find what they are looking for when they visit a VW dealer in search of a large electric SUV.

The ID Crozz goes into production in Volkswagen’s Chattanooga factory next year. It seems a safe bet the Roomzz will follow along quickly to meet the challenge from Tesla’s Model Y and Ford’s long rumored but not yet seen electric SUV.
