Hyundai Shows Neira Electric MPV Prototype in Indonesia Motor Show

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Hyundai Motor Co. unveiled its Neira prototype at the 2026 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show in Tangerang, signaling a major expansion of its electric vehicle strategy in Southeast Asia.
Officially described by the South Korean automaker as a three-row family vehicle, the Neira is tailored specifically to meet the high-capacity transport demands of Indonesian households. The prototype previews a production model scheduled to roll off assembly lines at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia before the end of 2026.
The presentation of the Neira highlights a calculated shift in how global automakers approach electric vehicle deployment in emerging markets. Rather than relying solely on high-end global models like the IONIQ 5 or the larger IONIQ 9, Hyundai is moving toward localized, segment-specific electric vehicles capable of competing directly with lower-cost alternatives. In Indonesia and neighboring markets across Southeast Asia, multi-purpose vehicles with seven seats represent the dominant volume segment for private passenger transport.
Underneath its distinct bodywork, the Neira prototype shares a close mechanical relationship with the Kia Carens Clavis EV, an electric multi-purpose vehicle recently introduced in India. Observers at the show noted identical body proportions, door structures, and window lines between the two vehicles.
Platform sharing between Hyundai and Kia is a standard manufacturing practice designed to optimize research costs and accelerate production timelines. By utilizing the same architectural baseline as the Carens Clavis EV, Hyundai avoids the lengthier development cycle required for a bespoke vehicle. This collaborative engineering structure enables both brands to deploy distinct visual identities while benefiting from joint component sourcing and shared assembly line tooling.
While the silhouette reveals its shared lineage, Hyundai has applied its own design language to the Neira. The front section replaces the traditional radiator grille with a smooth, fully enclosed panel tailored for electric aerodynamics. A thin, full-width LED light strip spans the upper edge of the fascia, accompanied by vertically stacked lighting clusters positioned lower on the front bumper. Silver body cladding along the lower bumper and side sills gives the vehicle a rugged appearance similar to a crossover, despite its fundamental minivan proportions.
At the rear, the prototype features vertically oriented LED taillights connected by a slim lighting bar across the tailgate. The vehicle rides on aerodynamically styled two-tone alloy wheels wrapped in substantial cladding around the wheel arches. Roof rails along the top further accentuate its utility orientation.
Inside, the Neira prototype features a cabin designed around maximum utility for three rows of passengers. The driver cockpit centers on a dual-screen digital panel combining a 12.3-inch instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch central infotainment display. A dedicated climate control interface sits beneath the main displays, maintaining physical controls for essential cabin functions.
Hyundai indicated that the production version will offer both six-seater and seven-seater seating configurations. Six-seat variants will feature individual captain chairs in the second row, while seven-seat models will utilize a bench setup. Additional interior features expected in the final production vehicle include automatic climate control with dedicated rear air conditioning vents, wireless device charging, multiple USB charging ports across all three rows, and vehicle-to-load bidirectional charging capability.
Although official technical data for the Neira remains limited, its platform connection to the Kia Carens Clavis EV offers a clear picture of its powertrain architecture. The vehicle is expected to feature a single front-mounted electric motor producing up to 171 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque.
Battery offerings are anticipated to match the two options available on its Kia sibling. The base option is a 42-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack delivering an estimated driving range of roughly 250 miles under regional driving test cycles. A larger 51.4-kWh battery option extends the claimed driving range up to 304 miles on a single charge. Using a 100-kilowatt direct current fast charger, both battery configurations can recharge from 10% to 80% capacity in approximately 39 minutes.
A primary aspect of Hyundai’s strategy with the Neira is localized manufacturing. Production will take place at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia facility located in Cikarang, West Java. Establishing local production allows Hyundai to take advantage of Indonesia’s growing electric vehicle supply chain.
Indonesia possesses the world’s largest nickel reserves, a critical raw material for battery chemistry. The Indonesian government has implemented policy mandates requiring high local content requirements for electric vehicles sold domestically. By producing the Neira in Cikarang and integrating locally sourced battery cells from domestic joint-venture facilities, Hyundai ensures compliance with local content thresholds, making the vehicle eligible for tax incentives that keep retail prices competitive.
The arrival of a localized three-row electric MPV addresses a crucial competitive gap. Chinese automakers like BYD Co., Wuling Motors, Chery Automobile Co. and MG Motor have expanded rapidly across Southeast Asia, capturing market share with affordable electric hatchbacks and compact crossovers. However, multi-seat family haulers have remained predominantly powered by internal combustion engines or traditional hybrid setups.
By introducing a dedicated three-row electric people mover, Hyundai aims to establish an early foothold in the family electric vehicle segment before rival brands can dominate it. The Neira will likely face competition from vehicles such as the BYD M6 and various domestic electric utility concepts, but Hyundai’s established regional dealership network and local assembly presence offer significant distribution advantages.
Export prospects for the Neira are expected to focus heavily on neighboring Association of Southeast Asian Nations members such as Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam, as well as potential right-hand drive exports to India. North American and European releases remain unlikely, as regulations and market preferences in those regions favor larger crossovers and SUVs like the Hyundai IONIQ 9.
