Brilliant AI Solution to High Solar Soft Costs & Overpricing in the United States

For more than a decade, it’s been clear that Americans pay much more for rooftop solar power than Europeans, Australians, and others. We have much higher “soft costs,” including much higher “customer acquisition” costs. Part of it, as well, is the sales process and sales tactics leading to … not the best deals at times. Someone who has been in the solar industry but far away from the consumers sales side of things for a long time has decided to change this. And, look, people here know I am not the most gung-ho about AI (for a lot of reasons). But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some brilliant, useful applications of AI. This certainly is one. Let’s get into it.
First of all, the company is AgentSolar AI, and the founder, Tursun Ablekim, has a history working at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and First Solar. Ablekim cuts to the heart of the matter and makes the point clear in an interview with pv magazine: “What is the point of a scientist spending years making a solar panel 1% more efficient if those gains are immediately wiped out by a sales process that adds 30% or 40% in ‘soft costs’ to the final price? We don’t have a hardware problem; we have an information and efficiency problem.” Word.
Here’s the real shocker, as summarized by Ryan Kennedy of pv magazine: “After gathering and analyzing over one million data points, Ablekim discovered that U.S. homeowners overpaid by an estimated $2 billion in 2025 compared to fair market prices. He refers to this massive premium as an unnecessary ‘sales-rep tax’ on the energy transition.”
So, how does one counter this?
There are multiple issues. One is not knowing what a fair market price is. Another is understanding all of the details in contracts. Another is resisting the pressure to go solar once salespeople have your number and email and are on your back. Ablekim has developed a solution to put AI — and humans — to work acting on behalf of the consumer to get a good deal and not fall for any traps.
“To combat this, AgentSolar AI was developed to act as an active, automated advocate for the consumer. Unlike traditional, passive chatbots that merely offer basic price-per-watt estimates, AgentSolar relies on agentic AI to take action on behalf of the user. The platform’s Quote Evaluation Agent can ingest a 40-page proposal PDF, extract financial line items, and cross-reference them against a comprehensive market database. Meanwhile, its Company Research Agent cross-checks company histories and reviews to verify installer reputation.
“Crucially, the platform takes active steps beyond passive feedback. If a homeowner decides to move forward, the agent initiates a structured negotiation workflow, developing concrete counteroffers and sending automated emails to secure better terms.”
Boom.
The buyer doesn’t get sent an actual offer until AgentSolar AI decides it has gotten a good deal and passes it on to them.
Even better, on top of all of the work of the AI system, the company has a human system admin review all of the communications.
Will this be the solution that finally cracks the nut of solar soft costs and drives them down to more normal levels? That’s what we’ll have to wait to see. Also, there’s still the whole permitting aspect of that challenge — but there’s progress on that front, too.
