BYD has just launched a big new model, the refresh of one of its most popular models of all time. The new BYD Great Tang pulled in 150,000 pre-orders before pricing was even announced, the most reservations a BYD model has ever received. And then pricing was announced….
The BYD Great Tang is coming at a price of just $35,500, or up to $45,900 on the fully loaded end, while offering 497–590 miles of range on a full charge, ultra-fast charging thanks to the new and improved Blade battery, and a luxury 7-seat interior. That price is more than a thousand dollars lower than its expected price. So, those 150,000+ early reservation holders were in for a nice surprise right from the start.
Even the base trim of the new Great Tang has a whopping 105.8 kWh battery, while the higher trim includes a 130.15 kWh battery. With nearly 600 miles (WLTP) of driving range, honestly, any concerns about EV range should be out the window and long, long gone.
The least powerful trim of the Great Tang comes with 496 hp from the rear (solo) motor, while a dual-motor version has 784 hp and can sprint from 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds despite the vehicle’s large size. Pretty wild. Imagine if Marty McFly came to town from the past and got to test this vehicle out.
With BYD’s new Flash Charging, take a guess at how fast the Great Tang can charge from 10% to 70%. I’ll leave you a moment to think about that with a couple of pictures and a video below to not spoil the answer.
If you guessed 5 minutes, get yourself an ice cream! You don’t have to go back to the time of Marty McFly to find that shocking. Just go back 3–5 years and that could seem unbelievable. And fully charging the battery takes … actually, I’ll give you another chance to guess before I reveal the answer.
It takes just 9 minutes to go from 10% to 100%!
If all of that wasn’t enough, you’ve also got the following:
- massage seats
- zero-gravity captain chair seats
- a giant entertainment display
- three dashboard screens
- a built-in cooler.
The Great Tang is larger than a Hyundai IONIQ 9. This is going to be a fan favorite with families. I expect to see it at or near the top of José’s China EV sales lists soon.
Unfortunately, while the Great Tang is launching in China and the Asia-Pacific region this year and making it to Europe next year, there are no plans to bring it to the United States. Remember, we have 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs (freedumb) and a very anti-EV administration running the show. Perhaps our neighbors to the north will get the model. If that does end up being the case, it’ll be interesting to see how Americans discovering the vehicle respond….
For those who do get to buy the Great Tang, enjoy! And let us know how you like the vehicle once you explore it a bit. I expect our first review article may well come from David Waterworth Down Under.
