BYD Commercial Vehicle Sales Jump in May

BYD’s passenger vehicle sales may be in a transitionary moment, going from year-over-year drops in the beginning of the year to a big sales rise in the second half of the year. In May, they were basically flat year over year. However, on the commercial vehicle side of the business, the company saw a big boost. (BYD’s commercial vehicles are all electric vehicles, of course.)

The quite hilarious thing this month is that BYD’s bus sales went down by the exact same percentage as the company’s non-bus commercial vehicle sales rose. The company’s bus sales dropped 19.6% and its non-bus commercial vehicle sales rose 19.6% year over year in May. That said, the two are vastly different in volume. BYD had 345 bus sales in May (compared to 429 in May 2025). It had 6,118 non-bus commercial vehicle sales in May (compared to 5,117 in May 2025). All together, that meant BYD’s commercial vehicle business rose 16.5% year over year in May — going from 5,546 sales in May 2025 to 6,463 in May 2026.

The funny thing is that it’s all flipped when looking at the year-to-date numbers. BYD’s bus sales were up 14% in January–May, while its non-bus commercial vehicle sales were down 12% in the first five months of the year. All combined, that meant its commercial vehicle division was down 10%. It had 27,726 sales in January–May 2025 and then had 24,956 sales in January–May of this year.

Overall, it’s great to see 16.5% growth in May, but hopefully that continues and the company can turn around its current 9.99% commercial vehicle sales decline in 2026.
